Santorini wedding

We are ‘only’ having a  symbolic ceremony in Greece.

As a wedding celebrant in Greece, I am forever on social media. I often comment in groups where couples ask information about venues, suppliers and budgets for their destination weddings in Greece. Often a comment or a question will start with ‘We are only having a celebrant led symbolic ceremony’ but………

It’s the ‘only’ bit that gets me every time.

But if you are looking for the cheapest option for your wedding ceremony in Greece, stop here!

If your reason for choosing a symbolic wedding ceremony in Greece, is because it is cheaper then ignore all the following tips and let the local registrar officiate your ceremony at an official venue. In this case you will have the equivalent of the civil ceremony without any official paperwork done in Greece and it may well be more economic than the legal version.

For everybody else planning a destination wedding in Greece

Here are the 6 top reasons why any couple would choose to have a symbolic wedding ceremony in Greece.

  • A celebrant led symbolic wedding ceremony is so much better than the civil version in Greece.
  • With a celebrant led symbolic wedding ceremony, there are no generic scripts.
  • There are no time constraints.
  • There are no venue restrictions, so a celebrant led ceremony is perfect for your one-of-a-kind venue for example on the beach, at a winery, at your favourite Greek taverna, at your holiday villa, in your hotel gardens, on a yacht. I could go on and on!
  • You can include elements of faith, or from your culture. Your family and friends can participate.
  • You prefer not to or cannot do the legal paperwork in Greece.

What will happen if you choose a celebrant led symbolic wedding ceremony in Greece?

If you choose a celebrant led symbolic wedding ceremony in Greece, it will be better than the best. The ceremony will be all about you as a couple, how you met, who proposed, how you fell in love.

Couples who choose a celebrant in Greece, think of the marriage as the legal bit, and the wedding as the ceremony to celebrate.

Many of them just arrange a simple legal 2+2 civil ceremony at their local registry office, often not telling their family and friends and then have their ceremony to celebrate in Greece. Many choose to have a symbolic signing too, so that their witnesses can take part.

A very happy couple

Liam and Melissa (pictured in the featured image on this blog) had their wedding ceremony in July 2021 at the beautiful Le Ciel, on the romantic Island of Santorini. When they saw their wedding script for the first time, this was their reaction

Hi Sarah,

I just want to say WOW!!!!

It’s more beautiful and perfect than we could ever have imagined a wedding ceremony to be.

THANK YOU!

Really glad we found you to be our celebrant.

So never say that you are ‘only’ having a symbolic ceremony in Greece. The term is purely how the wedding is described in the industry. Your ceremony will not feel symbolic in any way. It is your wedding, the ceremony to celebrate your marriage, and there is absolutely nothing symbolic about that!
